Personality
John Dramani Mahama served as the President of Ghana from July 24, 2012, to January 7, 2017. He initially assumed the presidency following the untimely death of President John Atta Mills in July 2012, having previously served as Vice President from 2009 to 2012. Mahama was subsequently elected to a full term in the December 2012 election, securing 50.7% of the vote.
Economic Initiatives and Challenges
During his tenure as President, Mahama prioritized infrastructure development, leading to significant investments in the transportation, health, and education sectors. Notable projects include the expansion of road networks, construction of new hospitals, and enhancement of educational facilities.
However, his administration faced economic challenges, such as declining global prices for Ghana’s primary exports—cocoa, gold, and oil — which adversely affected the nation’s economy. Additionally, the country grappled with increasing public wage costs and mounting debt. A persistent energy crisis, characterized by frequent power outages known locally as “dumsor,” further compounded these issues.
Anti-Corruption Efforts
Mahama’s presidency was marked by efforts to combat corruption. His administration implemented policies aimed at increasing transparency and accountability within governmental institutions. Despite these initiatives, public perception of corruption remained a significant concern during his time in office.
2016 Election and Subsequent Developments
In the December 2016 presidential election, Mahama sought re-election but was defeated by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, who secured approximately 54% of the vote. Mahama conceded defeat and peacefully transferred power on January 7, 2017.
Return to Politics
After his initial presidency, Mahama remained active in Ghanaian politics. He was re-elected as President in the December 2024 election, defeating incumbent Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia. Mahama was inaugurated on January 7, 2025, marking his return to the presidency.
